3 in 1 Commode (Bedside, Bariatric, Drop-Arm) Maintenance & Product Care
Posted by Chris Loeser on 30th Mar 2014
Like other pieces of home medical equipment & supplies, bringing a commode into the home is supposed to add an extra level of convenience for patients & caregivers. For patients that have difficulty in getting to their bathroom or who are medically restricted in the amount of activity, having a commode close by can solve a number of potential issues. Since our website went live, we've received a number of emails & phone calls regarding the 3 in 1 Drop Arm Bedside Commode due in large part to the affordable price but also because of its flexibility in what it can be used for. Our all-in-one (3-in-1) Bedside Commodes can be used to assist a person who has difficulty getting to the bathroom. It can also be used over an existing toilet, like a raised toilet seat making it easier for the patient to stand. Drop-arm Commodes have armrests that drop down out of the way to accommodate transfers in confined areas. Extra wide, heavy duty & Bariatric Commodes offer additional strength, comfort & a larger seating area.
With regular use, as with any piece of equipment, it is often necessary to perform some regular maintenance to make sure your commode stays in good condition. From some of the conversations that we've had with patients & caregivers, we've grouped some of the more common questions into 2 areas, "Cleaning My Commode" & "Maintaining My Commode".
Cleaning Your Commode
Here are a few tips on Cleaning Your Commode... much like other bathroom surfaces, commodes can be cleaned with your standard household cleaners. *Recommendation from our maintenance techs - a solution with a little soap, a little bleach, in a bucket of warm tap water provides enough of a solution to both clean & sterilize pretty much any surface.* Of course, you're welcome to use Clorox Clean-up, either the spray or wipes, to sanitize your commode. Be sure to wear gloves & eye protection when working around bleach as the fumes & solution can irritate the skin as well as the eyes.
Maintaining Your Commode
As far as maintenance, aside from keeping it clean, your commode may have working parts like the 3 in 1 models so it's important to periodically check that the nuts & bolts are securely fastened. When moving your commode, if it happens to be a model that is adjustable, make sure that before the commode is used that the legs are firmly planted on a flat surface, that the height pegs are securely engaged & the product seat is level. Some products come with a spring-loaded peg that lock into pre-drilled holes on the legs (make sure you hear that "click" to ensure that the peg is engaged). Other models may have legs that are adjustable by loosening & tightening a fastener, or perhaps your commode has a combination of both? Please take caution to make sure that you've tightened the fastener & putting various amounts of weight down on to the commode to make sure it's tight enough. Last thing you want is to have the patient, family member or friend fall off the commode because the legs weren't fastened tight enough & the legs collapsed. Check Twice!!
